Sport
Welcome from Mrs Fairbairn, Director of Sport
Sport is central to life at West Hill Park. We believe sport and physical activity should be an important part of every child’s school life, so we work very hard to make sure each one is fully involved regardless of ability. We are lucky enough to have great facilities, including an astro pitch, swimming pool, tennis and netball courts, large sports fields, riding school and a well equipped sports hall to offer as wide a range of opportunities as possible, allowing each of our pupils to find an enjoyable way to get involved.
We regularly play other schools and achieve frequent success in regional and national tournaments which reflects both the hard work our pupils put into their sporting activities and the great satisfaction they gain from them. From their first year at West Hill Park, pupils enjoy competitive sport through inter-house competitions.
Each year group swims at least once a week, with additional access, splash and elite swimming clubs, so there are two opportunities weekly for all to swim.
Our Little and Wild Griffins take part in regular sports activities such as swimming and dance, and join us for Sports Day. Reception pupils enjoy a sports lesson taught by specialist staff weekly, alongside their swimming lesson. This increases through Year 1 and 2 until fixtures and Games start in Year 3. We run a varied and dynamic PE curriculum, with lessons around fundamental movement, invasion games, gymnastics, basketball and so much more.
Autumn
Autumn term brings both girls’ and boys’ football, a firm favourite with our pupils – followed by girls’ hockey and boys’ rugby!
Spring
In Spring the boys have their turn on the hockey field, whilst the girls turn their efforts towards netball. Cross Country also starts to feature in the calendar.
Summer
In Summer we play both girls’ and boys’ cricket – a sport we are incredibly lucky to have beautiful grounds to play in! Our athletics programme also kicks in, culminating in our Sports Days (yes, there are more than one!) at the end of term.
